Charles Victor R. Sharpe was born in Kirtling in 1897 (Newmarket Q1-1897 3B:523), son of Charles and Ellen SHARPE, (née MILLS).

1901 census...Aged 4 he was at Malting End, Kirtling with his father Charles SHARPE [28] farm labourer and Private in Reserves Brigade of Guards, born in Kirtling; his mother Ellen [24] born Great Bradley and sister Violet [2] born in Kirtling.
His father had enlisted in the Coldstream Guards ( giving his age as 18 8/12) in 1891 for 5 years and on completion joined the Reserves where he was mobilised for the South African war in 1899, serving twice in South Africa before completing his 12 years service in 1903.

1911 census...Aged 14, farm labourer, he was still at Malting End, Kirtling with his parents, sister Violet and twin sisters Faith and Mercy [8], born in Kirtling.


He enlisted in Newmarket.
The 11th Suffolk had suffered many casualties in April 1918 in the Battle of the Lys, being relieved on 17th/18th. As Victor's Army records have not been found, there is no way of accurately placing him at the time he was wounded.
He shares a headstone with 2nd Lieutenant W.W. Lodge, Middlesex Regiment.
